The Runner Review: Gal Gadot's Intense Real-Time Thriller (2026)

The Runner Review: A Real-Time Thriller with a Familiar Twist

The Runner, starring Gal Gadot, is a real-time thriller that, despite its intriguing premise, falls short of delivering a truly captivating experience. The film's plot revolves around Maia Marten, a high-powered lawyer and single mother, who finds her life turned upside down when her son is kidnapped. The catch? She must follow a series of sinister commands to get him back, all while running across London.

What makes The Runner interesting is its attempt to blend the real-time thriller genre with a high-stakes scenario. The constant ticking clock and the need for Maia to move swiftly create a sense of urgency and tension. However, the film's execution leaves much to be desired.

One of the main issues is the underutilization of the real-time element. While the plot is set in real-time, the film doesn't fully embrace the constraints and opportunities it presents. The audience is often left waiting for the next command, which could have been used to build suspense and keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Gal Gadot's performance is commendable, especially considering the physical demands of the role. Her portrayal of Maia's determination and fear is a testament to her acting prowess. However, the film's pacing and structure let it down. The first ten minutes and the final fifteen minutes, in particular, feel rushed and weak, diluting the intensity of the thriller.

The film's ending, while attempting to be surprising, falls flat due to its predictability. The use of a familiar twist ending, especially one that might be guessed by those familiar with Damian Lewis' acting style, undermines the film's attempt at a shocking conclusion.

Furthermore, the film's visual style and direction could have been more impactful. The claustrophobic 4:3 aspect ratio, while intended to create visual intensity, doesn't quite achieve the desired effect. The on-screen visuals, such as text messages and apps, look dated rather than innovative, which is a missed opportunity for enhancing the film's atmosphere.

In my opinion, The Runner is a missed opportunity for a truly engaging real-time thriller. While it has some interesting moments and a strong lead performance, the film's pacing, structure, and ending leave it feeling underwhelming. Perhaps a more innovative approach to the real-time genre or a different narrative structure could have saved it from becoming just another thriller that falls short of its potential.
